Dental Implant Candidacy
Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements that are used to counter tooth loss. The procedure is categorized as a form of prosthetic (artificial replacement) dentistry, though it also falls into the category of cosmetic dentistry as well.
Strong, durable and natural in appearance, dental implants are among the most successful dental procedures performed.
In many cases, dental implants may be the only logical choice for the restoration of all necessary functionality of the teeth and supporting structures.
Tooth or Teeth Loss
Teeth are lost because of:
- Tooth decay
- Root canal failure
- Periodontitis (gum disease)
- Trauma to the mouth
- Excessive wear and tear
People who have lost teeth might feel too self-conscious to smile or talk. Additionally, biting irregularities caused by tooth loss can have a negative effect on eating habits and this can lead to secondary health problems like malnutrition. Regardless of the nature of problems related to tooth loss, dental implants may provide a simple solution with best results.
Advantages of Dentistry
Dental implants are stronger and more durable than their restorative counterparts like crowns and fillings. Implants offer a permanent solution to tooth loss. They can also be used in combination with out restorative procedures. Dental implants can also be used to support a dental bridge which replaces more than one missing tooth, and can be used with dentures which makes teeth more stable and more strongly rooted, it also reduces effect of gums ‘sliding down’ and leaving teeth root uncovered.
Periodontists and oral surgeons are people who are classified as dental surgeons and they do the dental surgery.
The Procedure
The technology of dental implants made it virtually impossible to distinguish natural teeth for dental implants. This is achieved with a help of integration of dental implant into a healthy jaw bone. The procedure usually takes one visit to a dentist, but there is there is time period after that, during which the implants is ‘getting used’ the bone, and its called osseointegration.
Osseointegration is the process during which the dental implant is rooted and stabilized in the jaw bone. An osseointegrated takes anywhere from three to six months to anchor and heal, but as mentioned before the technology in our dental clinic allows us to do it in half this time, this varies from case to case, consult with our dentist before procedure, after this period the dentist will complete the procedure by placing a dental crown on the implant.
Detailed dental procedural steps are the following:
Preparing for Dental Implants: Dental implant is a screw that is made out of titanium and is imbedded into a jaw bone, and a dental crown which is placed on it. A small-diameter hole (pilot hole) is drilled at the point where the tooth or teeth are missing, into which in next step the implant screw will be fitted.
Placement of the Implantu: After the initial pilot hole has been drilled into the point where tooth is missing, it is slowly widened to allow fitting of dental screw. Following this placement, a protective cover screw is placed on top to allow the area around dental implant to heal and it to anchor (osseointegration). After a period of time, protective cover is removed and a temporary dental crown is placed on top of the implant. The temporary crown serves as a template around which the gum grows and shapes to fit in a natural way. The process is completed when the temporary crown is replaced with a permanent crown. |
